Architects compete for design works

TWO local architectural firms have been selected to compete for the design work of $300m-illion Nausori project, says Doctor Brad Carver, chairman of Executive Development Properties Limited the project developers.

Dr Carver said the two firms and one from overseas were selected for the second architecture design competition.

We have commissioned a second architecture design competition for more of the major architecture design components for The Haven that includes the community centre, the terrace house development and a sports and recreation facility, said Dr Carver.

Two local firms Vitia Architects, headed by Filipe Tauva, and Clear View Architects, led by Ulaiasi Baivatu, have been invited to compete for the design work for these buildings and facilities.

The two Fiji firms submitted impressive portfolios for our first architecture design competition, for the commercial and retail centre and airport hotel complex, and have now been confirmed to compete with Australia-based firm Max Pritchard Architects, lead by Max Pritchard, for a second competition.

Dr Carver said the firms had been invited to present the following architecture designs of The Haven tourism property development:

1. Entrance way;
2. Community centre;
3. Terrace house development;
4. Commercial office building;
5. Gate house complex; and a sport and recreation facility.

EDP managing director Neale Slack said: Last week we announced the firms selected to compete for the design of the projects commercial and retail centre and airport hotel and since then have had principals and representatives from each of the firms visiting Fiji in preparation for their presentations.

Although the competitors in both competitions are very different, in every case the response to the site has been tremendous, Mr Slack said.

He said the commissioning of a second design competition concluded a critical phase for the project.

We now eagerly await the opportunity to view scheme designs by each of these remarkable firms when they take up our challenge to redefine tropical architecture, he said.

Mr Slack said representatives would present their designs to selection panels in Suva towards the end of next month.

The Haven will be Fijis first multi-faceted commercial tourism, entertainment and residential property development for Nausori.

The towns central business district will house an airport hotel with serviced apartments; a theme park; a commercial and retail centre; a gate residential community development featuring villas designed by architect Max Pritchard.
